Expectations from Google I/O 2024

Focus on AI

This year’s I/O is expected to focus heavily on Artificial Intelligence. Google recently announced its flagship AI Model Gemini along with its compact counterpart, Gemma. Although the launch of the AI Model hasn’t been smooth sailing the launch of Gemini’s image generator led to controversy, so much so that Sundar Pichai had to accept that the unintended consequences were unacceptable. Google launched Bard in 2023 which also got mixed reactions. At this point, Google has a task to defend its technology against stiff competition from Microsoft, Open AI, Anthropic, and many others.

Android 15

Android 15 is also expected to be announced during the AI with major updates for services like Gmail, Google Photos, Google Maps, and more.

Google Pixel 8a

Considering how Google unveiled the Pixel 7a during I/O 2023, this year’s event might see the launch of the Google Pixel 8a smartphone. The mid-range device might be announced during the keynote session by Sundar Pichai.

Reports claim that Pixel 8a will have a revamped design and will be powered by Tensor G3 chipset. It is said to have a bigger battery and faster charging speed as well. Google Pixel Fold 2

Last year, Google rolled out its first foldable device during the I/O. This time around, sources are divided about whether the company will tease the Pixel Fold 2 during I/O 2024 or not. Recent developments claim Pixel Fold 2 might be delayed as it has to be equipped with a Tensor G4 chipset. This would mean a fall launch, but Google might still tease the first look of the next foldable during I/O 2024.

Google Pixel 9

Last year, Google did not showcase the next Pixel 8 series device during the I/O. So, this time too the chances of Pixel 9 being showcased are slim, though Google might surprise everyone. The Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro are expected to have an updated design with flat frames and significant hardware updates.

More will be known about the Google I/O 2024 as May gets closer.
